Middle Tennessee Flood | Day 8 | Post #1

Saturday was a big day of shooting.  Finally, the individual stories are starting to make their way to me.  Since I don’t want to skip any important details I have decided to break day 8 up into a few different posts and give proper attention to appropriate people who have granted me access into their recent life experiences.  I have chosen to return to the Morrow Road and Delray Drive area to document the continued changes that are taking place in a short period of time.  This first post features a combination of people and imagery that resonated with me.  Now for the images…

Middle Tennessee Flood | Day 6

Today is actually day 8 of the flood but I am posting images that were shot on day six.  I am desperately trying to post images on the same day they are shot, or the next day, but am having difficulty keeping up with it all.  At any rate, I am going to take you back a couple of days to Thursday.   So I wake up on Thursday morning to yet another day of sun and blue skies.  Before I leave my house to shoot I keep thinking how I desperately want to get more stories from the flood survivors.  I toss up ideas in my head about how to go about such endeavor.  I know that the stories will come when it is time…I just have to be patient and be in the right place at the right time.  So I continue my exploration of the city.  It seems everywhere I drive I find little pockets that have been ravaged by the flood.  Then a street or two away from the pocket everything is seemingly untouched.  It’s so weird.  Although I really tried, day 6 wasn’t the most fruitful day of documenting but that is just the way it is sometimes.

Middle Tennessee Flood | Day 5 | Post #2

I am breaking up Day 5 into a few posts since there are several images I would like to share.  Yesterday I contemplated going to the shelters to find families to see if they would be interested in sharing their story with me.  To be quite honest, although I had such a desire I realized I wasn’t quite ready to make this step just yet.  While I feel so grateful that I have been spared from the massive damages of the flood I also find myself feeling guilty all at the same time.  I imagine I am not alone in this sentiment.  Nevertheless, I know what loss is like…loss in a different way.  I understand the feeling of your world feeling like it’s been turned upside down and not knowing how to proceed with the steps that need to be taken to continue with life.  There have been so many thoughts swirling in my mind as I have been documenting life after the flood.  Flood or no flood, I doubt the thoughts will ever cease to swirl in my mind.  It’s not a bad thing…it merely is what it is!

It’s difficult to express how weird it has felt this week documenting all of this when the the weather has been sunny and beautiful since Monday.  There is a bitter irony to the whole situation.  To say that bearing witness to everything is heavy and surreal is a major understatement.  While I have no idea whether anyone is seeing these images or will see them, I feel compelled to record what already is a significant part of Nashville’s history.  I do believe that Nashville will rise from the ashes to soar again, but in the meantime life (as always) must be taken one day at a time…

Middle Tennessee Flood | Day 5 | Post #1

Yesterday I managed to get out and continue documenting the flood damages, however I was too tired to update the blog last night.  I have decided to break up the images from day 4 into two different posts.  I apologize for not writing more about matters, but I am more of a visual storyteller than a writer.  I hope these images are giving everyone who sees them, and who do not live in the area, a glimpse into how greatly the people of this area have been impacted by the flood.  Also, if anyone reading this post has been impacted by the flood and wishes for me to help tell your story please send me an email.  If you have not been negatively impacted by the flood but know someone who has please pass this message onto them.  I really want to bring faces to the faceless and personalize this disaster.  And the story continues…
