Middle Tennessee Flood | Day 29 | Jess Neely Baseball Field Clean Up

One of the many areas in Nashville impacted by the flood was the Jess Neely Baseball Field which was flooded entirely.  The pictures below are of the clean up that took place on Day 29.  Jess Neely is comprised of three baseball fields which will entertain around 200 kids who signed up to play baseball this year.  Games are held Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturday.  Last year there were 250-275 kids that came out to play baseball, so the numbers are down a little.  Since the flood Coach and Baseball Director Jay Hartley has had to reschedule games at different parks until the facilities at Jess Neely are ready to once again host baseball games.  Many of the families whose children play baseball at Jess Neely have modest means, so trying to figure out how to come up with the money to restore the facilities to what they once where can seem like a hardship to many.  While I was documenting the clean up Home Extreme Makeover stopped by to check out the situation.  They would like to help with the restoration of Jess Neely but couldn’t make any promises at this point.  I am hopeful that they will pull through with everything.  I guess it’s a matter of wait and see…just like so many things in life!

Middle Tennessee Flood | Day 19

It’s Day 19 and I decide to head out to Bellevue one more time to see if I can photograph a neighborhood devastated by the flood that I had not yet photographed.  The neighborhood I end up photographing is on and near Beech Bend Drive.  I had seen terrible video footage, on the various news stations, showing this area on day 2 (and maybe even day 3) being under water in a major way.  What I saw was basically much of what I had seen in other neighborhoods that where flooded badly.  And there there is the ever familiar flood stench that seems to permeate everything.  How long will it take to restore this neighborhood back to it’s original state I wonder?  I guess time will tell.

Middle Tennessee Flood | Day 17

May 17th ends up raining so I take a day off from shooting anything flood related.  Instead, I focus on other work that requires my attention.  Ever since the flood I find myself feeling especially melancholy when it rains.  I imagine that I am not alone in this sentiment.  I did delight however, in the light following the early evening rain and couldn’t resist photographing Margaret’s roses that were continuing to dry up.  Whenever I walk into my kitchen and see Margaret’s flowers I am reminded of the little woman with a big heart.  Although the flowers are appearing rather spent I cannot bring myself to discard them…I’m just not ready to do so quite yet.  One of these days very soon I plan to give Margaret some prints of her flowers that I have so enjoyed viewing and photographing.  It seems like it would be the perfect exchange…a way to reciprocate the gift.  I think that’s what this life is all about.
